How are coaches for Rep Teams chosen?
  1. This process was designed and has been followed for a number of years.
  2. In response to a public advertisement, all potential candidates are required to submit a written application prior to the stated deadline.
  3. An interview panel is then formed. The people invited to participate on the panel have extensive hockey knowledge in a variety of areas.
  4. Each applicant is then called to an interview before the panel. They are also required to develop and present a practice plan appropriate to their desired age group. Each applicant is asked a range of questions relating (but not limited) to experience, coaching style, discipline, practice, theory, philosophy and communication. Following the interviews, the panel holds a round table deliberation to assess the merits of each applicant. At the end of the deliberation process, the panel makes their recommendation for each team.
  5. The panel decisions are then presented to the GMHA executive for confirmation. Any executive member having a child at a particular level or any connection to an applicant will declare a conflict of interest for that level and remove themselves from the room during that discussion.
  6. All applicants are then informed of the decisions with in 24 hours of the executive confirmations.
Why are Rep Coaches chosen so early?
  • This year the selection process was moved to the spring.
  • It is the first step as we begin to move the whole coach and team selection to the spring.
  • This is in response to the practice of many of the centers in the OMHA that we are now playing.  It will also help our teams to become and remain competitive with these centers.  More info will follow regarding this process.
If I am selected as coach, assistant coach, trainer or manager of a team and require certification or speak-out training...who registers me and pays for the course?
  • If the clinic is not being held in Gananoque, you will be required to pay for the clinic.
  • Once you have attended and completed the course please submit your receipt of course payment and the ‘request for payment form’ to the Treasurer, Theresa Donovan for full reimbursement.
  • If the clinic is being held in Gananoque, there will be no fee charged to approved GMHA members.
Does my child need to try out a rep team in order to be selected for a rostered "select team"?
  • No, a hockey player does not need to "try-out" for rep in order to be selected for the rostered select team.
When will the rostered select team players and coaches be determined?
  • Rostered select teams and coaches will be determined following the House League team selections.
  • House League teams will be given a few weeks together prior to the formation of Rostered Select Teams. This provides time for intercity coaches to determine who will be on the roster select team.
What is Rostered Select?
  • Rostered Select is an opportunity for House League Players to be involved in an additional level of hockey development.
  • Rostered Select Teams may play only 2 exhibition games per month and 3 tournaments in the season.
  • Rostered Select Players are chosen from the House League Teams.  They are traditionally the stronger players on the team who are looking for an opportunity for additional development.
  • A Rostered Select Player is first and foremost a member of their house/Inter City Team and must fulfill all obligations to their house team prior to any Rostered Select Team requirements.
What is Affiliation?
  • Affiliation is an opportunity for a player to play with a higher level team or age group.
  • Affiliation is also an opportunity for a team to call up players to replace injured, absent or suspended players.
  • Affiliation is also and opportunity for additional player development.
How does my Child become affiliated and what are my responsibilities?
  • The coach of the higher level team will approach you to ask if you are interested in being affiliated.
  • Before an affiliated player may play for the higher level team, the proper forms must be completed (including parent signatures and coach signatures from both teams), filed with Marilynn Thivierge and approved by the OMHA.
An affiliated player must completely fulfill all requirements with their original team before playing for the higher level team.
